Former President Lee Teng-hui was born in the Sanzhi District of New Taipei City on January 15, 1923, and he began his term as the seventh president of the Republic of China in 1988. In 1990 he was chosen by the National Assembly to serve the eighth term of the ROC presidency. Then in 1996 he was elected to serve the ninth term of the presidency in the nation’s first direct presidential election. When he was president, Lee pushed democratic reforms and modernization, advancing the development of the nation’s infrastructure and democracy. On May 19, 2000, his last term in office ended, and on July 30, 2020, he passed away at the age of 98.
In fond remembrance, Chunghwa Post has planned a commemorative issue of four stamps. The backgrounds of the stamps have largely been left a blank white in deference to the stamps’ design theme of splendorous light (echoing the meaning of the Chinese character hui in Lee Teng-hui’s name), as well as suggesting the passage of time, memory, and tolerance. The stamps are described below:
Firming the Foundations of Taiwan’s Democracy (NT$8): Former President Lee’s efforts to advance democracy earned him the name: “Mr. Democracy.”
Speeding the Modernization of the Nation (NT$8): During his presidency, the national health insurance system was launched, as was construction of high-speed rail and other important infrastructure projects.
Always in My Heart (NT$15): The spirit with which former President Lee watched over the nation’s people resembles the background image of Mt. Jade standing guard over Taiwan.
Taiwan’s First Popularly Elected President (NT$15): Lee waved to the people, announcing that democratization had arrived and turning the page on to a new era of history in Taiwan.
First Day Cover (195 mm × 120 mm): NT$3 apiece
Folder (with or without mount): NT$8 apiece
Loose-leaf album page: NT$8 apiece
Pre-cancelled FDC affixed with one NT$8-denominated stamp: NT$11 apiece
Pre-cancelled FDC affixed with a full set of stamps: NT$49 apiece
