Continuing the series of Taiwan Scenery postage stamps begun in 2016, Chunghwa Post has released a new set of these stamps on four famous sites in Kaohsiung City. Descriptions of their designs follow:
1. The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) (NT$6): Located in the Fengshan District of Kaohsiung, the center was designed by the Dutch architect Francine Houben, who drew inspiration from the old banyan trees of Weiwuying. It is marvelously integrated with the surrounding environment, realizing the vision of a national-level arts center that has zero degrees of separation from people's lives.
2. The Dome of Light in Kaohsiung MRT (NT$6): The work is in the Formosa Boulevard Station at the intersection of Kaohsiung's Red and Orange MRT lines in its Sinsing District. Created by the artist Narcissus Quagliata, the giant work creates its artistic flourishes with color and illumination. It brings a whole new aesthetic sensibility to this port city.
3. The Heart of Love River (NT$15): Located in Kaohsiung's Sanmin District, this site— “The Heart of Love River”—combines the functions of tourism with flood control and ecological improvement. The East Lake, West Lake, and bridge in the middle together form a heart-like shape. The beautiful lights reflected across the surface of the water create an intoxicating scene at night.
4. The Port of Kaohsiung (NT$15): Located at the extreme southwestern corner of Kaohsiung, it is the main port and distribution center for Taiwan's exports and imports, where shipping channels of the Taiwan Strait meet those of the Bashi Channel. Here giant cargo ships, naval vessels, and fishing boats shuttle in and out of the port's blue waters, as shipments are swallowed, disgorged, loaded, and transferred in the port's container yards. The busyness of this harbor scene is truly special and a delight to behold!
Personal greeting stamps without marginal inscriptions have been also released along with the stamps, which feature a full set of “Taiwan Scenery Postage Stamps — Kaohsiung City.” These customizable stamps are suited to collect.
