Our country's first President and Vice President, elected directly by the people in the country's first-ever presidential elections, took offices on May 20 this year. To mark the occasion, a set of 4 stamps and a souvenir sheet featuring the portrait of the President and the Vice President were issued, with the national flag, the presidential-office building, the development of Asia-Pacific Operations Hub project, or folk activities showing in the background. The souvenir sheet is comprised of the four commemorative stamps. Our country's first-ever presidential elections were completed smoothly on March 23, 1996, an important milestone marking a substantial achievement in the country's democratization. The elections also demonstrated to the world that the Republic of China on Taiwan has entered the forest of democratic countries. Both the President and the Vice President elected directly by the people are to use their wisdom and courage to keep Taiwan in pace with the world trend and to think what the people are thinking. They are also expected to merge people's consensus to make unprecedented contributions to the country ' s development and prosperity in the years ahead.
