This set of Chinese Stone Lion Postage Stamps takes as its motifs four kinds of stone lions from Taiwan: (1) Stone Lion of the Taipei New Park. (2)Stone Lion of the Hsinchu City Council.(3) Stone Lion of the Hsinchu City God Temple.(4) Stone Lion of the Fort Providentia of Tainan. The image of Chinese stone lions can be split into the northern and the southern lions. The northern lion, as exemplified by Lukouchiao stone lions (盧溝橋石獅), is large bodied with a long mane and few curls, and big and round eyes. The southern lion, as found in Fukien, Canton, and Taiwan, is distinguished by its curly mane. Much emphasis is put on the nose, and the tail usually bends toward the body. Taiwanese stone lions have had different appearances in accordance with the period when they were made.
