The northern lion, as exemplified by Lukouchiao stone lions (盧溝橋石獅), is large bodied with a long mane and few curls, and big and round eyes. The southern lion, as found in Fukien, Canton, and Taiwan, is distinguished by its curly mane. Much emphasis is put on the nose, and the tail usually bends toward the body. Taiwanese stone lions have had different appearances in accordance with the period when they were made.
