In praise of the beauty of calligraphy, Chunghwa Post has chosen “Former Ode on the Red Cliff” by the Song dynasty poet-artist, Su Shi. This scroll is held in the National Palace Museum. Chunghwa Post has planned to present it in three sets. The first set has five se-tenant stamps with each stamp valued at NT$8.Su Shi, courtesy name Zizhan, sobriquet The Hermit of Dongpo, came from Meishan in Sichuan. He was equally good at poetry, painting and calligraphy and holds a high place in literature, acclaimed as one of the four great calligraphers of the Northern Song dynasty. The scroll with the Ode is one of the few extant works in his own hand. The brushstrokes are full-bodied yet sedate, showing his understanding of human life. The work is a classic piece of literature having proven its value for nearly a thousand years.
