A painting by Yang Chih-yuan, who attends Sinpu Junior High School in Banciao who participated in the 2002-2003 Lions Clubs International Poster Contest sponsored by Kuang Ming Lions Club of District 300-B2, MD300 Taiwan, was originally chosen as the design for one stamp in a set of stamps, that the United Nations was planning to release on the International Day of Peace. But the PRC, objecting to a ROC flag in the painting, interfered to have the design replaced. To express our concern over these events and to publicize his work internationally, Chunghwa Post plans to issue its own “2004 International Day of Peace” postage stamp, featuring Yang’s painting, on the same day as the issue by the UN.Yang Chih-yuan is very confident of his own painting ability. Original and observant, he painted this award-winning work shortly after 9-11. Imbued with a strong sense of the importance of peace, the design is split into different sections: the sea of fire and the tank demonstrates the terror and cruelty of wars; a dove of peace symbolically carries the children away from war; and at the bottom children stand happily hand in hand while beautiful flags from different countries circle the globe, expressing the preciousness of freedom and peace and symbolizing the sublime goal of “universal brotherhood.”
