The South Pacific Regional Environment Protection Programme named 1995 as the Year of Sea Turtle in the Pacific, hoping to protect the sea turtle through an international cooperation in the Pacific region. In response to this action and to lift our country's image in protecting endangered wildlife, a set of sea turtles stamps was issued. Those chosen for the four stamps include the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas), Loggerhead Sea Turtle ( Caretta caretta) , Olive Ridley Sea Turtle ( Lepidochelys olivacea), and Hawksbill Sea Turtle ( Eretmochelys imbricata).
