The obsolete unit postage stamps previously printed by the Dah Tung Book Co. in Shanghai and the Ah Chow Lithography Printing Press in Hongkong, of which there was a big stock in the strong room, were gradually altered into face value stamps. The surcharge was all done by the Central Engraving & Printing Works, Taipei. Detailed descriptions are given as follows:1st surcharge. The domestic ordinary letter unit stamps of the Hongkong print were selected for this surcharge. The face value in Square style Chinese characters〝2角〞(twenty cents) and in Arabic figures〝0.20〞was printed in green.2nd surcharge. The domestic registration express fee unit stamps of the Shanghai and Hongkong Prints were both surcharged as 3 cents. The characters〝3分〞(three cents) in Square style and Arabic figure〝3〞(with floral decorations on both sides) appear in the upper right and lower left corners, respectively show the surcharge.3rd surcharge. The stamps surcharged in this lot are domestic air mail unit stamps of the Hongkong Print. In a horizontal line across the top is the surcharged wording 〝3分〞(three cents) in Chinese characters of the Square style, and at the bottom of the stamp is the Arabic figure〝3〞 also with decorations on both sides.4th surcharge. The domestic registration fee unit stamps of the Hongkong Print were selected for this surcharge. As arranged in the previous three surcharges, the Chinese surcharged wording〝1角〞(ten cents) reads horizontally in a straight line across the top, and the Arabic figures〝0.10〞with two small flowers on both sides at the lower part of the stamp.5th surcharge.Another lot of domestic ordinary letter unit stamps of the Hongkong Print were selected for this surcharge. The surcharged denomination of 20 cts. in Arabic figures and Chinese characters appears in the upper right and lower left corners respectively. Although the stamps used for the first and fifth surcharges are of the same kind, the arrangement of surcharged numerals is different. For the first surcharge the Chinese numeral is on the upper part, while for the fifth it is on the lower part.
