Description

To pay tribute to deceased Taiwanese painters who made great contributions to advancing Taiwanese culture, Chunghwa Post, following on its first set of “Modern Taiwanese Paintings” postage stamps (issued in December 2002), has once again taken suggestions from the Taipei Fine Arts Museum for its second set of four stamps (Issue of 2003) in this series. The stamps feature works by late Taiwanese painters Lu Tie-jhou, Lin Ke-gong, Chen Jin and Li Ze-fan.
The designs of the stamps follow:
(1)The“Back Yard” by Lu Tie-jhou: Lu Tie-jhou (1899-1942) was born in Dasi, Taoyuan County. Lu studied paintings in Japan and his works won several awards at the annual Taiwan Exhibition over the years. His Nanming Painting Institute cultivated many Gouache painters. His works are realistic depictions of nature, and he especially excelled at capturing birds and tropical plants. The composition of “Back Yard” is well knit, and its color arrangement and depiction of texture fully display his skills and style. Gouache on paper, 213cm x 174cm.
(2)“A Goldmine Town: Jioufen” by Lin Ke-gong: Lin Ke-gong (1901-1992) was born in Banciao. Originally, he went to study law in the UK, but then later he traveled to London, Paris and Switzerland to learn paint. With his solid painting skills, his works have an elegant and moving demeanor. The fine composition and simple but rhythmic styling of “A Goldmine Town-Jioufen” depicts clearly the layers of buildings and mountainous topography of Jioufen. Graying-yellow and ivory color light illuminates the whole painting. Oil on panel, 91.5cm x 76cm.
(3)“Leisurely” by Chen Jin: Chen Jin (1907-1998) was born in Siangshan, Hsinchu County. After studying painting in Japan, she became one of the top Gouache painters in Taiwan. Her style was elegant and refined, brimming with a feminine beauty. “Leisurely” depicts a genteel lady lying on a luxurious bed inlayed with mother of pearls. It precisely expresses the lifestyle of the upper classes of the time. Gouache on silk, 136cm x 161 cm.
(4)“East Gate” by Li Ze-fan: Li Ze-fan (1907-1989) was born in Hsinchu. Working in education for 50 years, he developed his own unique opaque watercolor skills, creating new styles like “color washing” and “color layering.” His works often focused on local customs and traditions. “East Gate” is a wonderful blend of historical buildings, natural scenery and people, intending to show a leisurely and harmonious atmosphere. Watercolor on paper, 44cm x 59cm.
