Description

A string of bright pearls in the Taiwan Strait, the Penghu islands are made of basalt and marked by dramatic landforms created by coastal erosion. These give Penghu tremendous potential as a world-class geological attraction and resort spot. To publicize Penghu’s unique landscape and culture, Chunghwa Post has planned a set of four stamps on Penghu in its Scenery series. The designs follow:

1.        Little Taiwan, Qimei Islet (NT$5): Little Taiwan is a platform on the east coast of Qimei Islet that has been shaped by the waves. The platform, created by the continuous action of the waves, is so named because it is shaped like the island of Taiwan.

2. Basalt Rocks, Xiaomen Islet (NT$5): Xiaomen Islet is located to the north of Penghu’s Yuwong Island. Regarded as a living geology classroom, the basalt mesa island’s diverse geologic scenery epitomizes Penghu.

3. Heart Stone Weir, Qimei Islet (NT$10): The Twin Heart Stone Weir is a traditional tidal fish trap made of two chambers. Its beautiful twin-heart shape makes it a romantic

and poetic spot.

4. Whale Arch, Xiaomen Islet (NT$10): The Whale Arch is the most famous coastal erosion landform on Xiaomen Islet.Originally a columnar basalt cliff, the base of the cliff was undercut by waves until eventually an arch was formed.

To add to philatelic interest, Chunghwa Post also issues a stamp folio. The stamp folio comprises a set of the four stamps and a set of pre-cancelled maximum cards.
