To increase opportunities for person-to-person diplomacy and to encourage philately, the Directorate General of Posts (former post office of R.O.C.) sponsored the Asian International Invitational Stamp Exhibition in 1993 and the tenth Asian International Stamp Exhibition in 1996. The TAIPEI 2005 - 18th Asian International Stamp Exhibition is the first large international stamp show since the Directorate was corporatized to become Chunghwa Post. It is going to be held on August 19-24, 2005 in Taipei World Trade Center. To publicize and celebrate this occasion, Chunghwa post is issuing a series of eight separate souvenir sheets. Each sheet has an individual serial number. Sheet No. 1 and No. 2 are designed for warming up and propagation of the exhibition. Sheet No. 3 to No. 8 is separately designed for daily release during the process of the exhibition. The first one – “Taiwan Landscape” – will be released on August 27, 2004. It consists of one NT$5 stamp and one NT$25 stamp.
The first one – “Taiwan Landscape” – consists of one NT$5 stamp and one NT$25 stamp. The background of the souvenir sheet is a shape of Taiwan Island. On its right side is a light blue ocean with fine white horizontal lines; to its left is just a field of light blue. In the foreground are the following scenic vistas: Yeliu, Gueishan Island, Sun Moon Lake, Mt. Ali, Taroko Gorge and Kending. Sun Moon Lake and Mt. Ali have been chosen for the two stamps. On the left side of the souvenir sheet is a black-winged stilt, a protected bird that lives in the Biegu Wetland Ecological Preserve in Dongshi, Chiayi County, and on the right side are the cetaceans of Taiwan’s East Coast. The plum blossom at the bottom symbolizes the indomitable spirit of Taiwan.
