Special 421Taiwan Mountains Postage Stamps:Mount Jade



To let our citizens understand the magnificence of the mountains of Taiwan and raise the quality of their mountain recreational activities, this Directorate has chosen Mount Jade, Mount Hsueh, Mount Nanhu and Mount Chilai for a series of stamp sets on "Taiwan Mountains." These four sets of stamps will each consist of four stamps. The first set--Mount Jade--features the Main Peak, Western Peak, Northern Peak and Eastern Peak of Mount Jade.

Taiwan is an island surrounded by the ocean on four sides, with high mountains running from the northern corner to the southern tip of the island. The island has more than a hundred peaks with an elevation of over 3,000 meters. Most of these are part of the Central Range, the Mount Hsueh Range or the Mount Jade Range. These mountain ranges, which present one towering ridge after another, are known collectively as "the green great wall." The Mount Jade Range is situated in the center of Taiwan, and all of its peaks have an elevation of over 3,000 meters. Very few people live in this region, so the area's virgin forest, wildlife and plants are well preserved. There are, therefore, ample eco resources here. The main peak of Mount Jade is about 3,952 meters tall, the tallest in Eastern Asia. It combines with the eastern, southern, western and northern peaks to form the magnificent Mount Jade Range. On top of the northern peak, there is a weather station belonging to the Central Weather Bureau, which is the highest building in Taiwan.

This Directorate has specialty commissioned Mr. Ben Wang to handle the plan of a series with 4 volumes - Mount Jade, Mount Hsueh, Mount Nanhu and Mount Chilai - of postage stamps pictorial featuring Taiwan Mountains. A total of 60,000 copies for each volume will be published jointly on the first day of issue of each relative postage stamps set, which will be
available at all the philatelic counters and the philatelic centers throughout the country. Each volume will be sold at NT$180.00 apiece. The first set - Mount Jade - will be published on March 8, 2001. The remaining three sets will be published in 2002, 2003 and 2004 respectively. Each volume will consist of one set of 4 stamps relating to the relative subject and color postal cards which can be drawn out. Chinese and English interpretations with relative photographs will be used to describe thoroughly for these four mountains, which rank among the "Top 100 Mountains in Taiwan." These pictorials will provide a great opportunity for the stamp collectors to view the exciting visions of these four mountains from various aspects without climbing over them and let people know how Taiwan is esteemed as a beau-
tiful island. They are certainly suitable for both gifts and collectibles. A deluxe collection of the 4 volumes with a total of 10,000 sets will be available simultaneously on the first day of issue of "Mount Chilai" pictorial - the fourth volume of this series. The deluxe collection will be sold at NT$ 750.00 per set, which will certainly add to the collecting value and interest
of the philatelic items.
