Special 391 Kinmen National Park Postage Stamps

Establishing national parks and protecting the natural environment are important parts of the government's development plans. The national parks help to protect natural environments, provide recreational sites for our citizens, develop tourism, bolster local economies and foster academic research. In coordination with the government's promotion efforts, this Directorate has previously issued five sets of well-received national park postage stamps, one each for Yushan, Kentinq, Yang-mingshan, Taroko and Shei-pa National Parks. In order to publicize the unique features of Kinmen National Park, the Directorate has chosen four special scenic spots in that park for a new set of four stamps. Two will have face values of NT$5.00, and the others will have values of NT$12.00 and NT$19.00.

The stamps feature these famous scenic sites:
(1) Taiwushan is the largest expanse of craggy terrain and the highest area of the Kinmen Islands, about 253 meters above sea level. It is made of granite and gneiss. Because "these loominq rock formations are built from layers of rock upon rock, when one looks at them closely, they appear to be the armor an ancient soldier wore." Therefore the area is named Taiwushan, which means "ancient soldier mountain."
(2) Kuningtou Cliff is located at the northwest corner of the island and is one of the sites of the Kuningtou battle.
(3) Teyueh Tower is part of Huang Hui-huang's house in Shuitou village on the southwest corner of the island. Long ago pioneers on the island built this fortified tower to defend themselves against pirates.
(4) Liehyu Coast has a rich and varied coastal scenery. Putou beach, amid the coast and on the north side of Liehyu, is a red clay beach which has been washed away by the sea, exposing reddish brown stone that changes color as it absorbs water or dries. Locals call it "cat river stone". The beach is a unique scenic spot of the park.
