Shen Chou (1427-1509), a native of Chang-chou, Kiangsu, was one of the Four Great Masters of the Ming dynasty.〝Lofty Mount Lu〞was completed in 1467 as a present for his teacher's seventieth birthday.
The painting is a hanging scroll, 98.1×193.8 cm in size. Although the brushwork in this piece was modeled on the style of the Yuan dynasty artist Wang Meng, Shen Chou, painting to the best of his ability, created a work which shows an even stronger sense of straightforwardness and vigor. The mountains and rocks were first painted in light ink; then using heavier ink, the artist built up the ink strokes layer by layer. The brightness of the clouds and the coloring of the mountains are beautifully rendered.
