The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded on November 4, 1946. With the promotion of educational, scientific and cultrual ties and cooperation among nations as its mission, UNESCO contributed materially to member countries along these lines since 1946. The Chinese National Commission for UNESCO began to function in August 1947 with the purpose of assisting in the accomplishment of the UNESCO programs in China. To acquaint the public with the achievements of UNESCO in China and at the suggestion of our Ministry of Education and the UNESCO, a set of 〝UNESCO Activities Postage Stamp〞 was issued.
The 0.80 stamp, in vertical type, shows an arm palette, a flask, a gear, a pair of compasses and a book, all symbolic of UNESCO's activities. The 2.00 stamp, in horizontal type, takes a book, a symbol of education, as the central design with the UNESCO emblem above the book. The central design for the 3.20 stamp, also in horizontal type, is two hemispheres overlaid by the UNESCO emblem with arrows on either side pointing in opposite directions symbolical of UNESCO's efforts and activities in cultural exchange between East and West.
