The China Youth Corps (CYC) since 1953 has sponsored a training program in which boys and girls may voluntarily participate during their summer vacations. From 1953 to 1960 the program was so popular among Chinese youth that its participants totaled more than 65,000. The activities are conducted outdoors aiming to familiarize the youth with the beauty of the land, to increase their skills and knowledge through practice and wider observation, to foster their esprit de corps as well as to build their physique. To depict the significance of these summer activities, a set of postage stamps was issued in two denominations.
