Description

During our long anti-communist campaign, Kinmen and Matsu are two outposts closely linked with the defence island chain in the Western Pacific and regarded as strategic vanguards of the Free World.

On August 23, 1958 the Chinese communists resumed their aggressive war in the Taiwan Straits by an intensive artillery bombardment on Kinmen. Their attempt to break through this important line of defence was repulsed by the strong and courageous resistance of our Armed Forces. In honor of this total victory in the strait war showing the importance of defending Kinmen and Matsu, and to encourage our compatriots to full and vigilant preparedness against further communist aggression, a set of〝Defence of Kinmen and Matsu〞postage stamps was issued on the Fifth Armed Forces Day.
