Description
The building that is now the Control Yuan was originally the government building of Taihoku Prefecture. Construction on this historically significant building began in 1913 and was completed in 1915. On April 24 of the same year, a ceremony was held to celebrate its completion. In 1958, it became the offices of the Control Yuan. In 1998, the ROC government formally designated it as a national historic monument. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Control Yuan building, to celebrate this occasion, Chunghwa Post is issuing a NT$25-denominated stamp featuring this historically significant building.
The designer of the building was Matsunosuke Moriyama, the official architect of the Office of the Governor-General. The building is largely a work of baroque architecture in the Renaissance revival style with various elements taken from different European architectural traditions, including an octastyle portico, saucer domes, a mansard roof, dormer windows, broken pediments, cartouches, and bull’s-eye windows, as well as window and door hoods. This brick arches demonstrate architectural panache and contemporary style. The building is an outstanding example of classical architecture.
