Description

First established as the Tsing Hua Academy on the mainland in 1911, the school was renamed National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in 1928. In 1956 NTHU was reestablished in Taiwan. At first, NTHU in Taiwan focused on Nuclear Science and Technology before gradually expanding to cover other science and engineering subjects. The last two decades brought degree programs in the humanities and social sciences, life sciences, electrical and information engineering, and technology management. These turned NTHU into a general university with well-balanced curricula. With a long-term policy to recruit outstanding academics from abroad to return to Taiwan to teach, the school has achieved academic excellence and developed into a research university with an international reputation. Its alumni include three Nobel laureates and one Wolf Prize winner in mathematics. Near the Hsinchu Science-Based Industrial Park and the Industrial Technology Research Institute, NTHU has reaped great success in research projects that involve cooperation among industry, government and academia. For the past century, NTHU has helped to cultivate the island’s elite and made great contributions toward raising Taiwan’s international competiveness. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding, Chunghwa Post is releasing a set of two stamps on April 20, 2011. The designs follow:

1. NT$5 Stamp: The stamp features NTHU’s second campus gate and a red brick building, which served as the school’s old library for four decades. The retro color scheme of the stamp highlights NTHU’s long history. Once a school landmark, the old brick library was torn down in 2008. Yet it will live on as a beautiful memory in the minds of the university’s faculty and alumni.
2. NT$25 Stamp: The stamp features NTHU’s current campus gate and its Humanities and Social Sciences building. The blue color scheme of the stamp symbolizes technology and the outstanding achievements of the school’s science and engineering departments.
There is a picture of the school’s flag in the upper left corner of both stamps.
