The critical political and military situation in Shanghai in mid-1949 necessitated the printing of nuit stamps in Hongkong, which was done by the Ah Chow Lithograph Printing Office(香港亞洲石印局). The stamps were printed on the plates originally made by the Shanghai Printing Press of the Dah Tung Book Co. (大東書局上海印刷廠). The design and wording are the same as those of the Shanghai Print, while the plates, inking, and paper are also very much alike. However, the Shanghai stamps were invariably perforated with small round holes, while the Hongkong stamps were rouletted.
