In the spring of 1949 the communist troops pushed south so repidly toward Nanking and Shanghai that supply of stamps from the Postal Supply Department in Shanghai to the Southeastern Postal Districts was in constant danger of interruption. Photos were immediately prepared at Shanghai from the original design of the Dah Tung Print and sent by air mail to Chungking, where offset plates were made by the Hwa Nan Printing Press(華南印刷廠) for the printing of new new stamps.
Though the design and wording are the same, the Chungking plates are much coarser in comparison with the Dah Tung plates. The paper used was also coarser.
