The rapid depreciation in value of the Gold Yuan notes necessitated repeated revision of postage rates causing increased consumption of stamsp. Intaglio printing thus proved too slow to meet the actual requirements. Lithographic process was consequently used for subsequent stamp printing by the Shanghai Printing Press of the Dah Tung Book Co. The design and wording are the same as those in intaglio stamps, but the photogravure plates are comparatively coarse.
