The stamps were surcharged in No. 4 Sung typeset characters in red by the Engraving and Printing Department of the Central Trust of China, Chungking.
The first stroke of the character 〝伍〞is blunt at the end and the right part of its last stroke at the base is slightly curved downwards. The stroke〝一〞in the character 〝改〞points somewhat horizontally toward the left side. The distance between the characters〝改〞and〝作〞is 5 1/2 mm.D39.2 Kweichow 20×10 2.1943

The surcharge was made by the Engraving and Printing Bureau of the Central Trust of China, Chungking (重慶中央信託局印製處) in No. 4 Sung typeset characters in red. The character style is similar to that chosen by the Directorate General of Posts, but in the character〝伍〞 the first stroke has a sharp point and the last stroke is even. When the Central Trust of China, Chungking first undertook to print stamps in 1942, the postage for ordinary letters was 16￠per unit, and a big stock of stamps of this denomination was printed. On December 1 of that year the ordinary letter rate was increased to 50￠. Consequently, various District Head Offices were instructed to surcharge part of their existing stock of 16 denomination with the wording 〝國內平信附加已付〞(domestic ordinary letter surcharge paid) for use as 50￠. On December 7, 1942 another circular telegram was sent to all districts instructing them to print the characters 〝改作伍角〞(altered to be 50￠) in the 4 Corners of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's portrait (in stamps not yet surcharged) and to print the Arabic numeral〝50〞at the bottom.
