To promote the beauty of classical Chinese poetry, Chunghwa Post released issues of “Classical Chinese Poetry Postage Stamps” in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Now it has followed up with a set of four stamps on the theme of “fishing, wood-cutting, farming and studying,” which were common occupations in traditional society. The stamps feature “The Fisherman on the River” by Fan Zhongyan, “Singing While Cutting Wood on Mt. Lu” by Luo Zhongshu, “Pity the Peasants” by Li Shen, and “Exhortation to Learning” by Yan Zhenqing. The poems follow: 1. “The Fisherman on the River” by Fan Zhongyan (NT$8): “Back and forth on the river / The man seeks beautiful bass / I watch the boat / As wind kicks up surf.” 2. “Singing While Cutting Wood on Mt. Lu” by Luo Zhongshu (NT$8): “In autumn, trees fall in the mountains / As the wood cutter makes his daily quest / Through the valleys / His songs resound.”3. “Pity the Peasants” by Li Shen (NT$12): “Hoeing under the midday sun / Sweat drips onto the soil / Who knew that the rice in one’s bowl / Comes grain by grain from such toil?”4. “Exhortation to Learning” by Yan Zhenqing (NT$15): “From lamp lighting to cock crowing / Those are the best hours for a boy to read / If one does not know hard study when hairs are dark / Regrets will be too late when hairs turn gray.”
