Intelligent transportation draws together state-of-the-art information and communication technology and puts it at the service of transport infrastructure and vehicular equipment so as to enhance the safety and fluidity of transport, improve people’s mobility and decrease the environmental impact of travel. Taiwan’s intelligent transportation has been developing for over twenty years. To make Taiwan’s successes in the field better known, Chunghwa Post is releasing a set of four stamps and one souvenir sheet with the full set of stamps. A detailed description of the stamps follows:1. Little Green Man Pedestrian Signal (NT$8): On March 18, 1999, the world’s first Little Green Man Pedestrian Signal with a countdown indicator was inaugurated in Taipei. Initially, the Green Man walks, but, as the deadline draws near, he quickens pace to tell people to cross faster.2. Electronic Toll Collection (NT$8): To ensure an equal toll for all and to reduce time wasted in waiting and the resultant pollution, on December 30, 2013, highway tolls changed to a system that recorded mileage in all lanes without the need to stop. Taiwan became the first country in the world to have a toll on its highways with no tollgates.3. Multipurpose Smartcard (NT$8): Faced with the inconvenience of manual fare collection and the need to carry loose change, a smartcard, that can be used on various forms of transport and even extended to small, everyday purchases, provides people with simplicity of movement, all in one handy card.4. Transportation Information and Management (NT$8): Previously, travel information was available in Taiwan only in a passive format. The government began to promote intelligent transportation, via infrastructure, analytical management of information and the traffic network big data. People can acquire the latest information by mobile phone, on electronic display signs and over the radio.
