Hu Shih, Chien Shih-Liang and Wu Ta-You were three contemporary thinkers and educators extraordinaire, all of whom at one time served as president of Academia Sinica. They are noted for their remarkable contribution to the country’s scholastic and educational development. In acknowledging their legacy, the Post has designed a set of three stamps, printed in intaglio. The designs follow: 1. Hu Shih (NT$5): Born in Jixi County, Anhui Province, Hu was a pivotal figure who impacted contemporary Chinese literature and thinking in the 20th century. His influence was felt in Chinese philosophy, history and literature. Besides promoting vernacular Chinese and scientific approaches to problem-solving, Hu inspired common people with his pioneering insights, thoughts and writings. He campaigned for academic independence, and was actively involved in Chinese liberalism and reform. During his stint as Academia Sinica president, Hu acted as a cultural pioneer in efforts to rebuild Taiwan. 2. Chien Shih-Liang (NT$5): Born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, Chien was a prominent chemist and educator. While serving as president of National Taiwan University, Chien became the protector of a liberal, independent academic climate, and he actively promoted the spirit of "universal and balanced development" on campus. While serving as president of Academia Sinica, Chien worked to improve Taiwan’s academic research culture, and supported the development of life sciences, math and other scientific disciplines. He was a noted contributor to Taiwan’s science research development, and a pioneer in education, research and scientific development in the 1980’s.3. Wu Ta-You: (NT$5): Wu was born in Gaoyao, Guangdong Province, and is esteemed for his noteworthy achievement in the learning, teaching and research of physics. His publications were internationally revered, and he himself was a mentor to numerous students among whom were several heavyweight physicists of global repute. While serving as Academia Sinica president, Wu made his impact strongly felt in nurturing and retaining high-tech talents. He is considered the vanguard of Taiwan’s technological development. Wu is lauded as the "Father of Contemporary Chinese Physics" by academics.
