Due to the complexities of its history, Taiwan has a very diverse culture, and it always has. That fact that ethnic differences were reflected in every facet of life. To offer a glimpse at the hard, diligent and frugal lives of our Taiwanese forefathers, Taiwan Post is issuing a set of four stamps on the topic of food utensils. The designs of the stamps follow: (1) Rice Bucket and Shelf(NT$5.00): Most early Taiwanese rice buckets were made of wood. The size of these buckets correlated with the size of families. Shelves for these buckets, which had simple cross—stretcher designs, were also mostly made of wood. These were usually conveniently placed next to dining tables. (2) Steamer(NT$5.00): During the agricultural age steamers were necessary for cooking. They were either round (wood, bamboo or rattan) or square (wood). The wood steamer would absorb steam and the foods would retain their moisture and stay warm longer. (3) Rice Basket(NT$12.00): Either made of bamboo or wood. Bamboo rice baskets look similar to Chinese gift baskets, whereas wooden baskets are square. They were primarily used for transporting food. In the agricultural era, people often used these baskets to transport foods. (4) Dinnerware(NT$12.00): Bowls, plates and chopstick holders are the kinds of culinary artifacts closest to people’s lives. The dishes used by the common people of early Taiwan were coarse, heavy and big. Chopstick holders were wood, bamboo, ceramic or earthenware.
