This year the Chinese lunar New Year falls on January 29, 2006. It is the bing-syu year (bing is the third of the Ten Celestial Stems and syu is the eleventh of the Twelve Terrestrial Branches) and signifies the year of the dog. To welcome the year of the dog, Chunghwa Post is issuing a set of two New Year’s Greeting Postage Stamps (Issue of 2005) and a miniature sheet. The stamps and the miniature sheet will be released on December 1, 2005. This set of New Year’s Greeting Postage Stamps is taking the upcoming year’s Chinese zodiac sign as the theme and uses images of traditional New Year’s calligraphy and dogs to convey the joyous atmosphere of the New Year’s holidays. The NT$3.5-denominated stamp features a New Year’s calligraphy with a background pattern of purple flowers and plants. The NT$13-denominated stamp features New Year’s calligraphy with the Chinese characters for “Spring,” “Fullness,” and “Good Fortune” that convey the excitement of waiting for spring. The NT$12-denominated miniature sheet features three dogs of different appearances to express group harmony and ease, so as to convey to society best wishes for peace, health and happiness.
