LifeLine is an international telephone counseling organization, dedicated to provide a 24-hour telephone counseling services to prevent suicides and alleviate distress in the hope of helping callers to regain the courage to live and to reexamine the meaning of life. To demonstrate LifeLine’s concern for people’s lives, and publicize its telephone counseling and suicide prevention direct hot line —with the digits “1995” (a homonym for “please-save-save-me”)—and to fulfill its social responsibilities, Chunghwa Post is issuing a postage stamp with a denomination of NT$12 in honor of the organization, which will be released on July 1, 2005. In the spring of 1969, Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei established a “Suicide Prevention Center” to provide counseling services to emergency patients who attempted suicide. On July 1 of the same year, the center expanded its services to become a LifeLine center, offering the first telephone counseling and suicide prevention services in Taiwan. In order to establish standards for different service centers and to foster their long-term development, as well as to strengthen communication and cooperation with LifeLine International, ROC LifeLine International was established in 1977. Charged with leading and developing life-line services for the nation, it was renamed “LifeLine International, Taiwan” in May of 2001. Currently, the life-line telephone lines in Taiwan all end with the four digits “9595,” which is a homonym for “Save Me! Save Me!” The mission of LifeLine is to respect life, prevent suicide, and give a glimpse of hope to those in despair. Therefore, the stamp shows two arms holding each other to convey the counseling and care that LifeLine gives those feeling suicidal or emotionally troubled. “1995” is prominently displayed above the arms to publicize the LifeLine counseling and suicide-prevention telephone lines. Two circles connect the above-mentioned elements to convey that LifeLine brings hope and holistic care and provides round-the-clock service. The background of the stamp is an abstract leaf, which symbolizes the endless succession of life.
