To celebrate Taiwan's culture and to give people more knowledge about Taiwanese puppet, Chunghwa Post previously released a set of stamps on Taiwanese puppets (A World at One's Fingertips) on November, 2001. Now the company is going to release a second set of four stamps in this series, featuring the four eras of Taiwanese puppet theater and the performance spaces associated with them : outdoor performances, television, theater and film. The designs of the stamps follow: (1) Outdoor performances : The stamp features a traditional tsailou (a very colorful stage), where Journey to the West (a mainstay of the traditional repertoire) is being performed alfresco before a large crowd. The predominant color of the stamp is yellow, and a delicate antique tsailou is used to highlight the unique flavor of that era. In the upper right corner of the stamp are close-ups of the main characters in Journey to the West: Sun Wu-kung, Chu Pa-chieh, Sha Wu-ching and Tang San-tsang. The stamp faithfully conveys the spirit and appearance of that era of Taiwanese puppet.(2) Television : After televisions became widely owned, hand puppet performance became a mainstay of television programming. Television production techniques allowed for special sound and light effects, which brought about a big change in performance style. The stamp features a TV set showing a hand puppet program with special effects characteristic of the era. The upper right corner of the stamp includes close-ups of star puppets of that era, such as Heipai Langchun (black-white man).(3) Theater performance : Mysteries of the Wolf Castle was performed at the National Opera House. With the professional equipment, splendid lighting and stage designs that only a theater can offer, it revealed a new mode of puppet theater performance. The puppeteers were hidden in their own stage-upon-the-stage to overcome the difficulty of performing live in a large theater. The complexity of this performance was in sharp contrast to the simple traditional performances on, stages outside. The stamp features the gorgeous palace set used in the show, which was charged with dramatic effect as a result of the lighting. In the upper right corner of the stamp are close-ups of the main characters of the play : the master of the castle and his wife.(4) Film era : The stamp features the first modern hand puppet movie : Legend of the Sacred Stone, presenting the kungfu world of wooden hand puppets. It represented a milestone for hand puppet. With computer animation and other film techniques, it created a new form of hand puppet art. In the upper left corner of the stamp are close-ups of the major characters of the movie.
