To convey the magnificence of Taiwan's Mountains and raise the quality of ROC citizens' recreational activities in the mountains, the Directorate General of Posts has chosen Mount Jade, Mount Hsueh, Mount Nanhu and Mount Chilai for a series of stamp set on "Taiwan Mountains." These four sets of stamps each consist of four stamps. The first set, featuring Mount Jade, was released on March 8, 2001. The second set-Mount Hsueh-features (1) Winter on Mount Hsueh, (2) The North Ridge of Mount Hsueh, (3) Autumn on Mount Hsueh and (4) Glacial Cirques on Mount Hsueh. Mr. Chen Ping-yuan was commissioned to handle the planning for this series of stamps.Mount Hsueh is situated on the border of Miaoli County and Taichung County. The main peak of Mount Hsueh is about 3,886 meters tall. This is Mount Hsueh's highest point, and the central point of the Mount Hsueh horst, whose branches stretch to northernTaiwan. The cirques on the northeastern side of the main peak are believed to be the result of glacial movement. The bottoms of these glacial cirques roll gently and are full of High Mountain Juniper and Morrison azalea. As a result of fire, there is a unique forest of stand-ing but charred fir trees. During winter, the sight of the snow-capped mountains is magnificent.
