To give our fellow countrymen an understanding of the implements used in the rural areas of early Taiwan and to arouse their nostalgic feelings for life in olden times, this Directorate has specially planned a series of stamps featuring implements from early Taiwan. The four stamps in the first set will take four different agricultural implement as their subjects: Wind Drum, Plow, Bamboo Rice Basket, and Coir Rainwear. The designs are as follows:1. Wind drum: After the rice was dried under the sun, a wind drum was used to separate the rice grains from leaves and chaff. The rice would fall into a bamboo basket to be put to storage.2. Plow: A plow was an important device for turning the soil in preparation for sowing. Pulled by an ox in front and steered by a farmer behind, the plow would turn loose the soil into rows of ridges. After plowing, the farmers would level the field for sowing.3. Bamboo rice basket: Bamboo rice baskets were used to contain rice. Woven with thin bamboo strips, the baskets had a very Taiwanese flavor.4. Coir rainwear: Made from palm leaves, these were what farmers wore to keep dry. There was a one-piece version and a two-piece version.
