The year 2000 is a sacred year to the western Christian world. All around the world, people are holding all kinds of celebrations to welcome this once-in-a-thousand-years event. As the twentieth century is coming to an end, people of the world are greeting the 21st century with high spirits, hoping that the new century will be blessed with advanced technology, prosperity and world peace. In accordance with the coming of the millennium, this Directorate is issuing a set of four Y2K stamps and a souvenir sheet about the millennium, on the themes of information, environmental protection, industrial and economic development and peace. Two stamps will have denominations of N$5.00, one a denomination of NT$12.00 and the last a denomination of NT$15.00 The stamps are scheduled to be released on December 31, 1999. The stamp designs were painted by Mr. Chang Sheng-chuan. Mr. Wang Ping-nan served as creative director for these stamps, and China Color Printing Co. Inc. handled the color deep etch offset printing. The designs are as follow:1.) The Information MillenniumThe launching of the ROCSAT-1, the first satellite over which our nation has full control, should help Taiwan to become an Asian-Pacific operations hub. The ROC is making great strides to enter the ranks of the leading high-tech nations.2.) The Environmental Protection MillenniumWe only have one earth. If we don't pay attention to environmental protection now, maybe in the future we will have neither the agile Formosan Sika deer nor clear creeks. We hope that the world will take pause for greater reflection and pay attention to environmental issues, so that nature can survive forever.3.) The Industrial and Economic MillenniumHi-tech industry is the trend of the future. The super modern buildings and the high-speed railway currently under construction in Taiwan are but two of the many fruits that show that the ROC is a developed nation with stable and prosperous industrial economy.4.) The Millennium of PeaceWith St. Peter's as a background (the Vatican is a country in Europe that has diplomatic relation with the ROC) and the white dove of peace as the main theme, this stamp attempts to show the power religion has to promote world peace.
