To promote Chinese culture and introduce the world to the exquisite art of ancient China, the Directorate General of Posts has taken the suggestion of the National Palace Museum to base two stamps and a souvenir sheet on a painting of Emperor Shih-tzu, Yuan Dynasty, (also known as Kublai Khan) on a hunting expedition hy the Yuan Dynasty painter Liu Kuan-tao. Liu Kuan-tao was a skilled painter of landscapes, portraits, flowers and bamhoo, birds and animals. His painting of Kublai Khan hunting is one of a select number of fragile National Palace Museum works that are allowed to be exhihited only a limited number of days a year. The painting is set amid a vast sea of yellow sand, a typical scene on the northern Chinese frontier which depicts Emperor Shih-tzu Yuan Dynasty, leading his entourage on horsehack to hunt in the wilderness on a cool autumn day. The human figures are delicately depicted and their facial expressions are vivid. The drawings of the dogs, horses and camels are also very true to life. Kublai Khan, dressed in red and a white fur overcoat with hlack seam on it, is the leadinq figure of the paintinq, hut the horseman who is drawing his bow to shoot a wild goose on the left is the focus of the whole painting. The eyes of all the figures in the painting are fixed on him in anticipation of the arrow leaving his bow.
