Chao Meng-fu (1254-1322 A.D.), member of the Sung imperial family, resided in Chekiang. During the Yuan Dynasty (1280-1368 A.D.), he served as a court scholar, but fame came from his calligraphy and paintings, both of which have been studied and patterned after by artists of later generations. 〝Autumn Colors on the Ch'iao and Hua Mountains〞is a handscroll (93.2×28.4 cm) with ink and color on paper. Painted for Chou Mi (1231-1308 A.D.), respected friend of an older generation, this particular handscroll became regarded as one of the best of Chao Meng-fu's paintings. Chao melds his great technique and observation into unassuming naturalism. His composition avoids ornamentation and reveals serenity and simplicity.
