Taiwan's main western railway line runs through the central business districts of Taipei, conflicting with road traffic and urban development. To improve this situation, the government decided to put this section of the railway underground. The demanding Taipei Railway Underground Project was undertaken in spite of the high density population, bad geology, many adjacent high-rise buildings and lots of business activities in the Taipei central business districts. Through planning and management, the project is to be completed as scheduled in June 1989.
