On the 30th anniversary of the victory of the War of Resistance against Japan on September 3, 1975, in order to acquaint the public with the meritorious deeds of our martyrs in this holy war, a set of 〝Martyrs Postage Stamps〞 was released. This set consists of six vertical stamps-three in denominations of 2.00 and three of 5.00. Recommended by the Ministry of National Defense, the pictures of martyrs Chang Tzu-chung, Kao Chih-hong, Sha Shih-chiun, Hsieh Chin-yuan, Yen Hai-wen, and Tai Anlan, are adopted as the main designs respectively.Their background stories are briefly described as follows:2.00 Chang Tzu-chung (1891-1940):General Chang, born in Shantung, joined the 20th Army Division in 1914.In May 1940, when Japanese troops invaded Hupei province, he destroyed the enemy by personally leading the 74th Army Division to fiercely counter-attack them at Hsiangyang and Fancheng.Later, enemy enforcements came and the fighting became more fierce, resulting in very heavy casualties. On May 16, fighting bravely, he was shot five times. While dying, he said to his survivors: 〝For the country, I have fulfilled my duty. Follow me and continue fighting against the enemy until your last breath.〞His heroism and meritorious deeds are remembered not only by his compatriots, but he was also honored by his Japanese adversaries.2.00 Kao Chih-hong (1908-1937):Major General Kao, a native of Liaoning province, from the time of his youth longed to save his country, so at the age of eighteen went to France to learn to fly. On August 14, 1937, when Japanese aircraft launched alarge-scale raid after hostilities had broken out in Shanghai, he intercepted and shot eight planes; three were shot down and five were seriously damaged. This glorious feat was unprecedented in the Chinese Air Force. On November 21, he was sent to a station at Chouchiakou, where the Japanese planes unexpectedly attacked. He ran to his plane to take off, but before he could start the engine, the craft was bombed by the enemy and he died a heroic death.2.00 Sha Shih-chiun (1896-1938):Captain Sha, a native of Fukien province, since his youth greatly desired to preserve the national peace, and so joined the Chinese Navy. On October 24, 1938, while patrolling the waters at Chingkou to the southwest of Hankow, he was bombed by Japanese planes. Though he suffered two injured feet, he still bravely directed the fight. After severely damaging his ship, the enemy left. During the lull in the battle, he and his wounded crew left the ship on a sampan. Shortly the Japanese planes returned and strafed them. He was shot again and died, sacrificing his life for his country.5.00 Hsieh Chin-yuan (1905-1941):Major General Hsieh was a native of Kwangtung province. On October 20, 1937, about two months after hostilities broke out in Shanghai, he was ordered to guard duty against the Japanese army at the 〝Godown of United Banks〞to cover the friendly troops' stragetic retreat towards Jenru. This assignment in which he and his fighters fought a numerically superior enemy gave them the name of 〝Eight-hundred Heroes.〞 In fact, however, there were far less than eight hundred, only four hundred and fifty-two.To carry out his mission, he and his fighters fought bravely against the Japanese troops for four whole days without sleep. On April 24, 1941, while leading his battalion to hoist the national flag, he was shot to death by Japanese soldiers who had slipped into the barracks in a sneak attack. At the age of thirty-seven, his martyr's death caused the whole nation to sorrow.5.00 Yen Hai-wen (1916-1937):Lieutenant Yen was a native of Liaoning province. When hostilities broke out in Shanghai on August 13, 1937, he was stationed at Yangchow. On August 17, he was under orders to fly to Shanghai to bomb the Japanese head-quarters. Unfortunately, in executing the mission, his plane was shot.Descending by parachute, he landed in the midst of an enemy position. Surrounded by Japanese troops, using his pistol he committed suicide after killing several enemy soldiers. Thus, at the age of twenty-two he sacrified his life for the sake of his country. Such a brave spirit will always remain in our hearts.5.00 Tai Anlan (1905-1942):Lieutenant General Tai was a native of Anhwei province. On March 25, 1942, he joined the battle in Burma, and fought bitterly to defeat the Japanese troops at Toungoo. A few days later, on March 28, when a great number of the Japanese reinforcements came from all sides to attack Toungoo, he led his fighters in a fierce counterattack against the enemy, killing three thousand of them. On the following day, March 29, he repeatedly assaulted the Japanese soldiers escaping northwards at Yedashe. Because of his meritorious service, The Chinese Expeditionary Force became well-known around the world. Two months later, after having defeated the Japanese reinforcements on May 25, he once again fought the enemy in a furious battle to the north of Mong Mit. When seriously injured, he still bravely directed the fight. Finally, on May 26, 1942 he died a hero's death.
