On March 29, 1911 seventy-two young revolutionaries sacrificed their lives in an attack on the Manchu Governor's Office in Canton. Their heroic sacrifice spurred the whole country to a revolution against the Manchu dynasty which erupted in Wuchang on October 10, 1911 and eventually led to the foundingof the Republic of China on January 1, 1912. Thus March 29 was designated as Martyrs' Day. Since 1932, Youth Day has also been observed on that day in memory of these seventy-two martyrs.　　The newly rebuilt Revolutionary Martyrs' Shrine located in the northern part of Taipei is dedicated to the memory of the revolutionary martyrs. In order to pay homage to the revolutionary martyrs as well as to disseminate their lofty spirit of sacrifice, a set of 〝Martyrs′ Shrine Postage Stamps〞was released on March 29, 1970 with a front view of the main building of the Shrine in 1.00 and its gateway in 8.00.
