2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Dr. Mackay in Taiwan. In fond commemoration of his contribution to Taiwan, Chunghwa Post has issued a souvenir sheet with one stamp of a face value of NT$28. The stamp depicts a portrait of Dr. Mackay with Tamsui Church and Hobe Mackay Hospital on the right.Dr. Mackay was the first overseas missionary sent by the Canadian Presbyterian Church. He set out from Canada in 1871 and arrived in Tamsui on March 9, 1872. In 1879 he founded the Hobe Mackay Hospital as the earliest Western-style hospital in northern Taiwan. In 1882 he founded Oxford College to introduce Western scientific knowledge, and in 1884 established Tamsui Girls’ School, a pioneering institution of women’s education. During his nearly 30 years in Taiwan, Dr. Mackay made significant contributions to evangelization, medicine and education.
