Dr. Sun Yat-sen was born Sun Wen, whose courtesy name was Zaizhi. He was named Nakayama Kikori during his stay in Japan. He was born on November 12 during the fifth year of Qing Emperor Tongzhi’s reign (1866) in Cuiheng village, Xiangshan County of Guangdong Province. Sun left home to study abroad at a young age, and his exposure to Western influences transformed his worldview. In light of the fecklessness of the Qing dynastic court, and the nation’s growing disintegration, Sun stepped up in revolution to overthrow of Qing. Undeterred by the 10 failed uprisings, Sun eventually overthrew the dynastic rule, and established a Republic nation-state. In April, 1940, the Nationalist Government announced the canonization of Sun Yat-sen as the "Founding Father of the Republic of China" in recognition of his monumental contribution.November 12, 2015 marks the 150th year of Dr. Sun’s birth. Out of respect for Sun’s contribution, and in remembrance of his legacy, the Post launches a set of two commemorative stamps, the designs follow:1. NT$5: In the foreground is a portrait of Sun in Zhongshan Suit, taken in 1922. The background is a portrait of his younger self, and a thumbnail memoir in his calligraphy.2. NT$12: In the foreground is a portrait of Sun taken at the Generalissimo Mansion in Guangzhou in 1924. The background is a painting of Sun with fellow revolutionaries, to commemorate his founding of the Hsing Chung Hui ("Revive China Society") in the 20th year of Emperor Guangxu’s reign (1894) in Honolulu.
