Originally a township under the jurisdiction of Tongan, Fujian Province during the Qing Dynasty, Kinmen was elevated to county status in 1915. In 1926 the “County Office” became the “County Government.” In 1949 its county status was suspended and the Administration Office of the Kinmen Military Area was established. In 1953 Kinmen reverted to county status and the County Government was reinstated. To meet the needs of Kinmen as a war zone, a battlefield government administrative system began to be used there in 1956. When the Period of National Mobilization for Suppression of the Communist Rebellion ended in 1992, Kinmen returned to democracy, marching into a new era of local self-governance. The year 2014 is the 100th since Kinmen became a county. To commemorate the occasion, Chunghwa Post is releasing a set of two stamps. The stamps are designed as a se-tenant pair. A window from the Kinmen Division Commander’s Office during the Qing Dynasty has been placed on either side of the pair of stamps to symbolize entering Kinmen. The NT$5 stamp features Juguang Tower and the Western-style residential buildings of the Shuitou Settlement. The NT$12 stamp features the traditional Southern-Min-style buildings of the Shanhou Folk Culture Village as well as the Wentai Pagoda, a national historic monument. The stamps showcase Kinmen’s rich culture and historical relics and illustrate Kinmen’s special place in history as a stronghold in the sea.
