The inauguration of high-speed rail in Taiwan will signify a new milestone in the development of transportation in Taiwan. Running over 300 kilometers per hour along Taiwan’s Western Corridor, THSR realizes the dream of providing comfortable one-day travel between northern and southern Taiwan. It will also run approximately 345 kilometers in total. At first, trains will stop at eight stations: Taipei; Banciao; Cingpu, Taoyuan; Liujia, Hsinchu; Wurih, Taichung; Taibao, Chiayi; Shaluan, Tainan; and Zuoying, Kaohsiung. In the future, four more stations will be added, including Nangang; Fengfu, Miaoli; Tianjhong, Changhua; and Huwei, Yunlin. After opening, THSR will effectively solve the problem of traffic congestion along the western corridor and promote balanced development there. To commemorate the inauguration of this major national transportation infrastructure project, Chunghwa Post is issuing a set of two stamps, both with a denomination of NT$12.00. These stamps are being printed in a se-tenant strip and will be released on December 25, 2006. The designs of the stamps follow: 1. The front car of the 700T series is white with sleek orange and black lines. These extend to the cars behind it, providing the train with a beautiful sense of proportion and concisely conveying the rhythmic flow of THSR. 2. The architecture of Hsinchu’s THSR Station is a combination of technology and poetry. The aerodynamic roof of the station looks like a canopy billowing in the wind and emphasizes the dance of light in the streamlined and spacious building.
