Established in 1950 as the Tamkang Junior College of English, Tamkang was the first private institution of higher education in Taiwan. In 1958, it became the Tamkang College of Arts and Sciences and in 1980 was elevated to university status. After half a century, it has
become a broad-based university that encompasses 9 colleges and 41 departments and graduate institutes. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the school. To mark
the occasion, the Directorate is issuing a set of two "50th Anniversary of Tamkang University Commemorative Issue." The stamps will have denominations of NT$5.00 and NT$25.00. The NT$5.00 stamp features the historical "Palace Lamp Boulevard" and palace-like classroom buildings. The NT$25.00 stamp features the school's maritime museum, a unique five-story building built to look like a boat, as well as the university's "Scroll Plaza."
Tamkang University has two campuses. The Tamsui campus is located in the "Five Tiger Hill" area of Tamsui. It overlooks the township of Tamsui, Kuanyin mountain, the Tamsui River and the Taiwan Strait. It is very beautiful. The Taipei campus is located on Kinghua Street of Taipei. The third campus, the Lanyang campus, currently under construction, is located in Ilan County.
