The great achievements of the late President Chianq Ching-kuo in promoting democracy, planning economic reform and having the wisdom to allow contact with mainland China have won him the respect of the world. To show how the people of the ROC mourn and revere him, the Directorate General of Posts has chosen to issue a set of two stamps commemorating the l 0th anniversary of the passing of President Chiang Ching-kuo, one that bears his portrait and another that shows his love for the people. They have face values of NT$5.00 and NT$19.00 respectively. Scheduled to be released on January l 3, l 998, the l 0th anniversary of his passing. From his father Chiang Kai-shek, Chiang Ching-kuo learned about revolutionary self-sacrifice in devotion to the nation. His basic values and view of the world would serve him well over the course of his long political career.A public servant for 50 years, he left his fellow citizens with precious freedorr. and prosperity. He was called the veteran's family head, a spiritual guide to the youth, and the helmsman of efforts to modernize the nation's politics and economy. With an eye to the future, he carried out a series of political reforms: lifting martial law, allowing the free creation of new political parties and relaxing rules governing the registration and publication of newspapers. These allowed for much greater freedom and democracy. And after 40 years of no contact between the Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait, he allowed people to go to the mainland to visit their relatives, laying the groundwork for future contact between the two sides.
