Postal savings is one of the major businesses operated by post offices all over the world. In the Republic of China, the postal savings business began on July 1, 1919. It was designed to cultivate the virtue of thriftiness and to channel small savings into the banking system for the financial benefit of economic reconstruction. As of the end of March 1979, the number of depositors had reached 8 million. The huge sum of postal savings has made a significant contribution to the development of economic reconstruction and to the strengthening of national power.
