During the Korean War, thousands of Chinese communist soldiers were either captured by, or voluntarily surrendered to, the United Nations forces. In the truce negotiation the principle of voluntary repatriation was established. Some 14,000 Chinese war prisoners, unmoved by communist threats, valiantly chose the side of freedom, returned to the bosom of the mother country, and volunteered to join the Republic of China to fight against communism.　　Their return to Taiwan symbolized a unique victory in the anti-communist struggle. The day on which these former prisoners-of-war obtained their freedom, January 23, 1954, was named Liberty Day.On the first anniversary of the Liberty Day, a set of commemorative stamps was issued.
