Silo (西螺) Bridge, which crosses the Cho-Shui-Chi (濁水溪), the longest river in Taiwan, on the North-South Highway. It is 1,938 meters long in 31 spans and was the longest highway bridge in the Far East then.　　The bridge accomodates a 24 foot wide reinforced concrete roadway and a railroad track which connects with the Taiwan Sugar Corporation railway system. It was officially opened to traffic on January 28, 1953.　　The ECA China Mission helped with structural steel trusses. The successful completion of the bridge is eloquent testimony of the strength of Sino-American cooperation and China's speedy reconstruction during the past several years. In commemoration of the 1st anniversary of the opening of the bridge to traffic, the Postal Administration issued a set of stamps. The central design is the front view of the Silo Bridge in the $0.40 and $3.60 denominations and the side view in the $1.60 and $5 denominations. All the stamps have wide panels as their border lines. The $0.40 and $5.00 denominations have the usual arabesque decorations. The $1.60 and $3.60 denominations bear the historical and heroic pictures of Confucius, Su Wu, Mu Lan, General Yueh Fei, and Ko Chien.　　The commemorative booklet (158 × 110 mm.), with the full view of the Silo Bridge on the cover, contains stamps printed in souvenir sheets in four colors with a brief description of the bridge in Chinese, English and French.
