After the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, the Central Government moved westward to Chungking, which became the wartime capital for the duration of the war. On April 30, 1946, the Central Government moved back from Chungking to Nanking. On May 4 Chairman Chiang Kai-shek reached Nanking by plane followed by other government officials. On May 5 the Central Government again functioned in Nanking. 　　The stamps issued for the commemoration of this removal have stone arches of Dr. Sun's Mausoleum at the front with his Memorial Hall in the distance. In a horizontal line across the top are the characters〝國民政府還都紀念〞(Commemorating the Return of the National Government to Nanking). The border line on the four sides of the stamp is a combination of a series of 〝V〞in miniature symbolizing the removal of the Central Government back to Nanking after the victory.
