In the Western Szechwan Postal District the stamps were surcharged as basic stamps with two kinds of chops, of which one was stamped by machine and the other by hand. The machine was used to surcharge the Dr. Sun Yat-sen stamps of $500 denomination (London 4th Print) into two cents with No.5 Regular-Writing characters〝郵資貳分〞(postage 2 cents) overprinted on the sides, a No.6 Sung character〝蓉〞below the national emblem, and a No.5 square Arabic figure 〝2〞(with sharp corners) at the bottom. The stamps of 4 denomination (basic stamps) also of Dr. Sun's Portrait design (Hwa Nan Print) were surcharged with small rubber chops. The characters〝貳分半〞(2 1/2¢) were overprinted over the original face value in addition to another character〝蓉〞(Yung) on the left side of the portrait. Such stamps were overprinted by hand, piece by piece. At least 2 rubber chops were used for the surcharge with characters in different sizes.
