Having previously issued stamps on long-horned beetles on May 21, 2010, January 26, 2011 and March 9, 2012, Chunghwa Post is now issuing a fourth set. This new set of four stamps features four species endemic to Taiwan: Parandra lanyuana, Bunothorax takasagoensis, Oplatocera mandibulata, and Cyrtoclytus kusamai. The designs follow: 1. Parandra lanyuana (NT$5): This long-horned beetle has a dark brown body, which is sometimes nearly black with an iridescent sheen. It has short antennae, and there is fine stippling on its elytra. The male has two pronounced bulges on its head and prominent and a well-developed mandible. It is only found in damp and dark deciduous forests on Orchid Island, where it inhabits rotten wood. Adults measure 1.9-2.5 cm. 2. Bunothorax takasagoensis (NT$5): In Chinese the species is known as the Penglai red long-horned beetle. Its body is black, and its wings are red. The male’s antennae exceed its elytra in length. There are several bulges on its pronotum, and its elytra are ridged. They are found in deciduous forests, as well as mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, at elevations of 300-2,500 meters. Adults measure 1.3-1.6 cm. 3. Oplatocera mandibulata (NT$10): The species has a brown body, and the male a well-developed mandible. Its brown antennae are segmented and are black at the edges of each segment. There are black inverted V-shaped markings on its pronotum, and pairs of V-shaped dark markings on its elytra. It is found in deciduous forests of 1,000-1,600 meters. Adults measure 3.7-5 cm. 4. Cyrtoclytus kusamai (NT$25): It has a dark brown body and short antennae. Its thorax is long and oval shaped with fine golden hairs at its base. It has one thick and one thin light yellow stripe on both its right and left elytra. In terms of its appearance, it is a Batesian mimic of a wasp. It is found in deciduous forests at elevations of 100-1,500 meters. Adults measure 1.3-1.8 cm.
